Schedule Subject To Change!

There are two changes to the tapping schedule this Spring/Summer.

The first:  the April tapping will be April 13--NOT April 6.  The reason?  April 6th is the St. Francis Brewery's Birthday.  There will be other events going on all that week.

The second:  the July tapping will be July 13--NOT July 6.

Please update your calendars accordingly.

Thanks!

Sometimes We Loan Out Equipment

A new friend wanted to borrow one of our jockey boxes for a beer event.
I was happy to lend him ours.
That's our jockey box.
The blue thing.

It's Da Bomb!

Wednesday, March 9th, I'll be heading towards the shadow of the Allen-Bradley Clock Tower as one of four guest brewmasters showing off their wares at the Bomb Shelter.

I'll be rubbing elbows with old and new friends, along with David Bass or Rock Bottom, George Bluvas of the Water Street Brewery, and Christine Wisniewski of the Milwaukee Ale House.  We'll each feature two beers.  I'll be bringing the Part-Timer Pale Ale and the Mariner Nut Brown.

Details can be found here:  http://www.facebook.com/#!/notes/bomb-shelter/brewpubs-of-milwaukee-beer-tasting-wed-mar-9th-7pm/10150428701350104

Stop on by to say "hi" and try a pint or eight.

If It's Not Scottish, It's______________________!

(Fill in the Blank)

Yesterday we tapped the Scottish Heavy 70/-.

Despite it's name, it is easily the lightest beer I've ever brewed here at St. Francis.  With a unique blend of seven different malts--the main base malt being imported British Pale malt, with some Honey and Munich malts thrown in, this filtered ale is light and refreshing.

Pouring a beautiful copper color with a light tan head, this ale has a nice malty aroma with hints of fruit.  It starts slightly sweet and finishes very dry.  At an ABV of 3.6%, it is a "session beer", meaning you can enjoy several of them in a sitting without feeling full or wobbly.

The "70/-" designation in the name is commonly used by the Scots.  It stands for the shilling price that a tavern would pay for a hogshead--a cask that holds about 65 gallons.  The greater the alcohol content, the higher the shilling price would be.  A 70 shilling ale falls in the 3.5-4.0% ABV range.

Incidentally, the fruity looking guy in this picture is a good friend of mine.  I actually sang with him in a comedy quartet for ten years.  How does that joke go?  "Welcome to Heaven.  Here's your harp.  Welcome to Hell.  Here are your bagpipes!"

All kidding aside, Matt here performs with KAPDA.  Check out their link.  If you find yourself in a bar in Kenosha on St. Patrick's Day, chances are good these folks will show up and play the bagpipes until you buy them a beer.  Only then will they leave.

Some Cool Opportunities!

So I get a call this afternoon from the folks at Discovery World.

I know that they, like me, have a very special place in their hearts for the amazing brewing tradition that Milwaukee touts.  So much so, that they offer courses in brewing and and teach their patrons about the process, and the history.

Well, they have recently set up a small educational brewing operation.  I was asked to be their "guest brewmaster" for an upcoming event, and I couldn't be more honored.

I do not yet have many details, as they are forthcoming.

Also, Chef Justin of the Mequon Country Club is holding a special St. Patrick's Day event involving food pairings with craft beer.  He approached me to see if I would be interested in providing the beers for this event.  Not only will our beer be paired with the courses, but it will also be included in the recipes, themselves.  Again, I will post more details on this event as the date draws nearer.

Ahh, the rough life of a Brewer.....

Going's On

Well, the Double Red tapping has come and gone.  Very fun night--as evidenced by the smiles as the night went on.  It's going quickly (again) so stop in and get yours.

Brewed up the Weisse on Wednesday and the Kolsch today.  Gotta keep those house beers up.

As a result of the Isthmus Beer and Cheese Festival a couple weeks ago, I picked up a new Madison account.  You can try three of our beers there!  The Mason Lounge  We have "re-branded" our beer for the Madison market, and will continue with this branding when the production brewery is up and running.  Modeled after the Seven Deadly Sins, we are featuring the "Wrath" Red Ale, the "Pride" Doppelbock and the "Gluttony" Nut Brown Ale.

Next week, I'll be brewing the March Seasonal--Scottish Heavy.  More about this will come later.

Have a great weekend everyone.  It's Fish Fry night, and ours is superb!

A Secret Beer

You know, I've been here a year and a half, and I've never brewed a Pale Ale.

Until now.

A couple of weeks ago, I had an open fermenter, and my house beer levels were all in good shape.  I decided to brew something to satisfy you hopheads out there--at least until the IPA Contest.

I brewed up a Pale Ale.  This one has four malts, along with a generous late addition of Cascade and Centennial hops.  The gravity got a little away from me, as this one clocks in at a 7.1% ABV!  That's high for the style, but the flavor is fantastic.

Normally, new beers are reserved for the Mug Club.  However, this one was an extra beer so everyone can have at it.

In that vein, I've decided to play with our house beer line-up a little bit.  While our Nut Brown Ale and Stout have very ardent followers, their numbers are small and those two beers tend to move a little slower than the others.  Therefore, they may rotate out of the lineup from time to time in favor of some other styles.  Don't worry.  If they leave, they won't be gone long, and in the meantime you'll be able to try a couple of different styles until their return.

Right now, in addition to the five house beer lineup, we have the Part Timer Pale Ale, the "Francinator" Doppelbock and the Harvest Strong is still lingering around.  Don't forget that the Double Red will also debut next week, February 9th.
